Overview of your Plymouth tour:

Picking you up at your hotel, from the train station or the cruise port, we will head out into one of our National Parks, Dartmoor, 365 square miles of protected landscape. I love the wildness of the Moor, with its exposed granite tops, the grazing herds of semi-wild ponies and wealth and depth of history hidden under the surface. . . just the atmosphere of being out on the moor is something to treasure. There are so many legends associated with the wildness of the Moor, as well as the visible effect humans have had on the landscape for the last 6000 years. Our visits can include short walks to special sites such a medieval clapper bridge, a grave of a young girl where there are always fresh flowers, a standing stone circle similar in age to Stonehenge, and a magnificent village church struck by lightning in the 1600's. Small towns include Princetown, home to the infamous Dartmoor prison and Tavistock where the architecture reflects the wealth of the Dukes of Bedford and their bonanza copper mine.

Your Plymouth tour itinerary

-Leaving Plymouth in the morning we will make for Princetown, home to a very good visitor centre plus the infamous Dartmoor Prison, built by French and American prisoners of war in the early 19th century. -Stop at Postbridge to see the medieval clapper bridge across the East Dart River -We then aim for the little remote village of Widdicombe, famous for its fair in early September and its imposing church. There will be several opportunities to sample the openness of the Moor by taking short walks. -Our journey back can include a stop at Buckfast Abbey, a medieval foundation, plundered after the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII in the 16th century, and totally rebuilt by a small cohort of Benedictine monks in the 19th century.
