Half a day on Dartmoor, the other half at the coast. Explore Dartmoor National Park in the morning, or afternoon and visit the South Devon Coast in the other (logistics to suit). Ancient neolithic sites, standing stones, stone circles and hut circle ruins can be found all over the landscape. Dramatic wind swept tors and craggy outcrops provide sweeping perspectives over picture postcard vistas. Quaint moorland villages, farmsteads that date back to Medieval times and Stannary towns with tin mining history provide a glimpse into the old ways of life on Dartmoor. A classic Inn for a hearty lunch, then onto the coast for tales of Pirates, seafarers and fisherman in places such as Brixham and Dartmouth then onto Start Bay with its WW2 history. Or, maybe a stroll along the promenade in Torquay where one Agatha Christie once roller skated or a visit to an old thatched village. Alternatively, by heading west from Dartmoor we visit the ocean city of Plymouth where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail for the new lands.
9am - Collection from accommodation, hotel or arranged meeting point and begin the day 9. 30/10am - travel to Dartmoor National Park. One of the last true wilderness areas left in England. A sense of real grounding and connection to the land that time seems to have forgotten. 12/1pm - Hearty pub lunch either on Dartmoor or as we descend towards the coast 2pm - Visit the idyllic South Devon Coast. Torbay, Torquay, Paignton, Brixham and the high sea cliffs. Dartmouth, a charming historic naval port with connections to sea faring greats such as Raleigh, Drake, the Gilberts and Hawley. 3. 30/4pm - Travel to Torcross, an area where dark WW2 history of training for D-Day unfolds with tragedy and international cover up conspiracies. A dredged Sherman tank marks as the memorial of the fallen. 5/5. 30pm Return to accommodation, arranged drop off point and reflect on the day of adventure.
