Join me on an exploration of my home town. Situated just a stone's throw from nearby busy Bath, Bradford on Avon is a film set town; a Saxon town; a woollen town; a rubber town; a "snuffy" town. It has a wealth of fascinating buildings which span the last 1000 years, all built from the local "Bath" stone. It also has evidence of substantial Iron Age and Roman settlement. Much of this precious heritage survives but the story of how and why is the basis of English history. . . and this fascinating and beautiful walk. Explore: Bradford's 500 year industrial heritage; the woollen cloth trade with its Weavers Cottages, Victorian factories and Georgian Clothiers houses; the Rubber industry; the canal and the railway. Visit: the atmospheric Saxon church; the magnificent medieval Tithe Barn; the iconic Town Bridge; the Iron Duke; the Shambles; and a Blind House. Hear stories: of the Horton family, the nuns of Shaftesbury, a Hermit, Alex Moulton and his bicycles and the bones of Edward the Martyr.
As a local historian and resident, my knowledge of the quiet, paths and alleys, and how Bradford is woven into English history, should give you a real understanding of this "hidden gem". We will: • Explore a unique medieval Grange Farm, a huge Tithe Barn, a Granary, and cross the Packhorse bridge. A regular a "film set". • Walk along the Kennet and Avon Canal and visit the wharf, lock (and tea shop!). Climb the beautiful hillside to visit the rows of weavers cottages, the stone mines, the hermit's cave and chapel, and see the glorious views. • Visit the ecclesiastical area, the unique, atmospheric Saxon church. Hear its story, and of the famous Parish Clerk. • Stroll the commercial and industrial heritage sites along the river and learn why it has uniquely survived; the Shambles, the old pubs, the "Black Hole", the Hall and the iconic medieval Town Bridge with its macabre "lock up". • This tour as a whole or partially, half or full day, can be customized to fit your preferences - please inquire!
